Saturday Night’s Meteor Shower

When was the last time you saw a meteor shower?  I haven’t seen shooting stars for ages!

Apparently, we will have a meteor shower tonight!

According to Jet Propulsion Laboratory, tonight( April 22nd, late night and early morning hours) we will have one of the best and brightest meteor shower, which is also known as the annual Lyrid Meteor Shower!

Depending on your location, you should be able to see 10~20 meteors per hour!
The meteor shower will be the at it’s best from 0200am~0400am April 22nd.

Cellphone Radiation Causes ADHD in Lab Mice

A study at Yale revealed more effects on cellphone radiation. The main subject of the research was based on offsprings of pregnant mice. The purpose of the research was to determined whether exposure to radiation would cause developmental disabilities including ADHD.

A silenced cellphone in active call mode was placed on top of a cage of pregnant mice. An inactive cellphone was placed on top of another cage of pregnant mice to act as a control. The mice in both cages had babies, which were allowed to mature. Then researchers conducted a variety of tests to measure brain activity on the adult mice who had been exposed to radiation as fetuses. The tests showed that the mice had lower memory capacity and were more hyperactive than the control group. The areas of the brain that control these functions were impacted by the radiation, say the researchers. They concluded that cellphone radiation negatively impacted brain development of offspring, and could potentially cause developmental disabilities including ADHD.

Dr. Hugh S. Taylor, chief of the Dvision of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Yale Medical School said,

“We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb,” Taylor told Science Daily. “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.”

However, mouses experienced a much shorter pregnancy process(only 19 days comparing to 10 months), their brains are also not as sophisticated comparing to us. This is one of the first studies performed on cellphone radiation effects on the offspring, and many more studies are in progress in this field.

I wonder how many people sleep with their cellphones next to them? In that case..I guess a lot of our offsprings are going to have ADHD…

Solar Storm To Reach Earth On Thursday

On Tuesday evening, the sun erupted, and the effects will reach the Earth between 1-5am on Thursday.
This will be the largest solar storm in five years.

The storm was started with a massive solar flare, and has been increasing its speed.
“It’s hitting us right in the nose,” said Joe Kunches, a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
According to professionals, the storm will last from Thursday to Friday morning.

The charged particle will hit Earth at 6.4million kilometres per hour. ( That is freaking freaking freaking fast.)
NASA solar physicist Alex Young added, “It could give us a bit of a jolt.” But he said this is far from a super solar storm.

On the other hand.. the good news is that we might be able to see auroras (Northern Lights) on Thursday evening.

Auroras are “probably the treat we get when the sun erupts,” Kunches said.

Northern Lights

In general, solar storms have 3 ways to disrupt technology on Earth; magnetic, radio, and radiation emissions. However, it is very unlikely that all three types of disruptions will be strong.

“The magnetic part of the storm has the potential to trip electrical power grids. Kunches said utility companies around the world have been alerted. The timing and speed of the storm determines whether it knocks off power grids, he said.”

Other than the potential to trip electrical power grids, it can also make GPS less accurate, and there might be a GPS outage.
In the meantime, some airlines had already rerouted flights.

Unlimited [Artificial] Blood Reserve Within Reach

Quite a several years back then, we had stem cell technology. From my extremely shallow knowledge of stem cells, they are pretty much like a self repair kit. I believe it costs around $5000 to have stem cells stored for future use. But anyways, that depends on where you from.

So this year, we came up with artificial blood. In fact, it has gone pretty far in the testing stage. Artificial blood has actually been injected to volunteers. After close surveillance of how the artificial blood cells functioned after being injected in the body, it has illustrated that it works just like a normal genuine blood cell.
