Physical Inactivity Killing More than 5 Million Annually.

Recently, the British Medical Journal had published a series of studies on the health consequences of physical inactivity. The results were shocking. According to the study, it shows that physical inactivity is responsible for up to 10 percent of the “burden of disease”, leading to a variety of health issues.

Unexpectedly, it is now the fourth-leading cause of death globally. How many people die of it every year? 5.3 million. It nearly accounts for one in 10 deaths! To put it in perspective,  it is even more than the number of deaths from smoking!

To narrow it down, when we talk about physical inactivity, we meant as in, the specific act of sitting. For some of us, we sit for long periods of time on a typical day(work, eat, coffee breaks, televisions, and when we are using computers).

A daily 15-30 minute daily exercise would be substantially beneficial, especially if you are sitting 6-8hours at work, and another few more hours of sitting outside of work. In fact, studies show that the cumulative effects of sitting are not easily treatable by exercise.

In 2010, a study consisting more than 100,000 adults, found that those who sat for more 6 hours/day would still be more likely to die than those who sat less than 3 hours, even if the group of adults who sat for 6hours/day exercise regularly.

It is said that, physical inactivity is a risk factor comparable to smoking! That’s how unhealthy it is for our body. Especially now that it is summer, go out there and enjoy the sunshine and work your body!

Ice-Cream With A Lock!

Being a university student, I always felt that I’ve been missing out on not having a roommate. That is, until I hear my friends who do have roommates tell horror stories about how their roommates hog the washrooms, keep them up at night, make a mess and most commonly eat food that’s not theirs.

The Problem

This is a huge problem since most students don’t have a car and have to take public transit in order to buy groceries then have to drag the groceries back to their dorm rooms every time their roommates eat all their food but there is now a solution to this age old problem. Ben and Jerry’s, the famous premium ice-cream maker has just introduced a lock known as the “Euphori-Lock” that can be placed on the lid of your precious Ben and Jerry’s Strawberry Cheesecake Ice-Cream! The lock on the lid works by having a number padlock that only opens to reveal the delicious goodness if the numbers match!

The lock is made for the pint sized Ben and Jerry’s Ice-Cream and there is even a label that says “I’m terribly sorry, but there is no “u” in my “pint”.

Why this is Brilliant!

This is a brilliant solution since we’ve all had those pesky roommates and house guests that like to eat all your food without your permission. Only problem with this is that if I was your roommate and I really had my heart set on eating your pint of Strawberry Cheesecake Ice-cream, I can always just pull a kitchen knife out of the drawer, cut the bottom of the ice cream packaging and nomnomnom away like there’s no tomorrow. Well, at least you forced them to make the effort… just pray that they didn’t make too big of a mess and leave it for you to clean up after!

Why you need to stop ordering spicy tuna rolls

These days everyone tells you everything is bad for you. Every kind of food for you is bad because it will be bad for your health, make your phallus and surrounding area shrink of you’re a guy; or like in today’s case, it can cause food poisoning as well!

If you’re like me; then you LOVE sushi, so today’s news should be a bit of a tragedy. Apparently; sushi is now dangerous to eat, and I don’t mean the rotten sushi either. So many of you may have heard of how McDonald’s in the states was under fire last year for “ammonia washing” their beef products. Apparently the same thing is done for fish. The spicy tuna roll that you’re snacking on right now? Yep, there’s a possibility that delicious roll has been reconstructed into that yummy mash that you’re chewing on right now.

You may think, “So what? It’s still food right? Everything is processed now anyways”. True dat bro, the only problem: two ugly strains of salmonella are associated with this form of food processing. When fish is filleted, there is still leftover meat left on the skeleton of the fish. To you and me, that is disposable meat. To the big corporations, that is money in their eyes. India catches and processes alot of fish these days. Not only is the so called “tuna scrape” just tuna, it is a combination of several different fish meats chopped and mashed together, then frozen and sold in giant blocks to restaurants all around the world. In the United States 80% of all domestically sold seafood is imported. Recently there have been 250 cases and a possible 6000 undiagnosed cases of food poisoning in the states with patients contacting Salmonella. What relates them all? 80% of the cases all claimed to have eaten spicy tuna rolls that contain the tuna scrape fish meat bought from grocery stores and restaurants.

Some food for thought: maybe next time you go out for sushi, stay on the safe side and order nigiri sushi or sashimi. Something that’s solid that you can actually see with your own eyes.

Not Sleeping Enough Will Make You Fat.

It has been a while since we posted anything regarding health issues, so here it is!

People used to say that, those who sleep a lot are lazy and fat. But thats not necessarily the case anymore.
A new study revealed that, having less than 7 hours of sleep will promote genetic influences associated with weight gaining.

This is not me.

The study was based on analyzing sleeping patterns and genetic markers of 1,088 pairs of twins. The results indicated that, those who had less than seven hours of sleep are 2x more likely to experience the genetic effects that promotes weight gaining, comparing to those who had more than nine hours of sleep.

In the conclusion of the study, it stated,”Shorter sleep duration is associated with increased BMI and increased genetic influences on BMI, suggesting that shorter sleep duration increases expression of genetic risks for high body weight. At the same time, longer sleep duration may suppress genetic influences on body weight. Future research aiming to identify specific genotypes for BMI may benefit by considering the moderating role of sleep duration.”

I can’t stress how crucial it is to have a normal and stabilized sleeping pattern. I am pretty sure most of us experienced times where we slept too much, and felt very tired upon waking up. At the same time, I am also sure most us experienced staying up all night long(especially during exam periods!).

Bride ‘tricks’ her fiancé into marrying her…by claiming she has cancer.

Well played Jessica Vega, very well played.

Jessica Vega is a 25 year old from New York, who has cleverly decided to use other people’s love and care to obtain her wishes.

Like getting married, for instance.

She is a bride who pretended to have terminal cancer so she could get the man she wanted, and in addition, scam money for the perfect wedding reception and honeymoon.

She will now face felony charges over the deception.

Vega apparently got everyone fooled-including her husband, Michael O’Connel, by telling the perfect sob story: “I’m dying from leukemia. I have less than one year to live. Can we make beautiful (and expensive) memories together?”

By using her community’s hearts, she profited off their generosity. Friends, families and even community members donated everything, from the wedding dress,  to the two-week trip to the Caribbean honeymoon.  She reportedly received thousands of dollars and wedding presents.

U Mad?

Weeks after the wedding, however, the husband finally notices that his pitiful wife’s condition was not getting any worse. In the past, she had showed him a letter from her doctors with the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. He proceeds to call her doctor, asking about her condition, only to discover that Jessica Vega, in fact, does not have leukemia.

Hooray!! Apparently the ‘letter’ she waved in front of his face in the past was a forgery!! It appears she’s actually a healthy lady!!

The couple are now divorced over the deception.

The maximum prison sentence for any of the felonies is 4 years. Vega was taken into custody on April 3 in Virginia and extradited to Orange County, where she was arraigned on Friday. She pleaded “not guilty” and was sent to Orange County Jail on $10,000 cash or $30,000 bond. She’s due to appear on April 20 in front of Judge Robert Freehill. The state police assisted with the case.

While it would seem likely that everyone is beyond furious about her deception,  people are actually pitying her. Instead of hoping Vega would rot in prison, family members and friends are hoping she would get mental support and therapy instead. O’Connell is even helping Vega find a lawyer, saying it is only the “right thing to do”. Very kind of him.

Which is interesting and “out of character” of Michael O’Conell, if we were to believe Vega’s story. Vega, at this point, has denied making up the whole cancer story and said she and her husband only separated because he was physically abusive.

So it’s first cancer, and now it’s domestic violence? What other sob stories can this lady think of?
