Are you obese? Do your friends call you a “Fat-F*ck Jelly Belly”? D’aaawwww, Poor you!….
Well you know what? Maybe now is a good time for some exercise and dieting. Earlier today I stumbled across an article by the University of Buffalo, the study claims that obese and morbidly obese people have a higher chance of dying in car crashes and receiving more severe injuries. It looks like besides health issues like diabetes, high cholesterol and other heart problems; driving is a danger for fat people everywhere too. “In a severe motor vehicle crash, a moderately obese driver faces a 21 percent increased risk of death, while the morbidly obese face a 56 percent increased risk of not surviving”
Interestingly though, it seems that being slightly overweight decreases your chances for injury and being underweight and normal weight puts you at higher risk of injury compared to the slightly overweight and chubby “accidentees”.
The study suggests the crash test dummies be designed to reflect the growing obese population of America. The change in crash test dummy design would force automakers to design their cars for the increasing average weight of people in society.
I understand that the whole point of this article is to bring awareness to safety and what needs to be done to reduce fatalities in car accidents….
…HOWEVER, what really bothers me is that there is not a single mention of dieting and exercise in the article. Instead of spending millions and possibly even billions of dollars redesigning and replacing crash dummies as well as developing a new way to measure crash tests, why don’t we get people to just lose weight?
As simple as that! It’s a good thing that we live in a society that is governed by laws that try to make big corporations look out for our safety, especially in something that can be potentially deadly like a car. The only problem is when we get lazy and expect the government and big corporations to have a solution to all of our problems. The solution is not in the car company’s hands, it’s in all of ours. This suggestion to reengineer crash test dummies to reflect a more modern and obese society is ridiculous. Car companies have as much responsibility over this as when a consumer crashes their car when drinking and driving. In fact, by changing crash dummies, we would be encouraging people to become more obese. This just disgusts me, Darwin has expressed that natural selection be the natural law of order, how we are promoting obesity ahead of competitiveness and fitness. Before we all start crying to the government or pushing our problems to someone else to look after; maybe we should try taking care of it ourselves.
